Yew chair

This chair is made from yew. I was given some odd branches of yew some time ago and eventually decided to use them to make a chair similar to the one made out of oak fence posts shown below.

Oak Chair

This chair is made from old oak fence posts which were used before the advent of treated softwood posts. They have been split from larger pieces to create sizes suitable for fencing, often they are triangular in section. I am not sure how old the posts I used for this chair are but would think more than 60 years. I have removed most of the soft and weathered wood with a draw knife which leaves a hard and very interesting textured surface.

Making this was quite difficult and took a long time because nearly all the joints are square section mortise and tenon. Because there are no straight or square surfaces to measure from, marking out and cutting joints has to be done with the help of various jigs and holding devices which I made for the job.

Oak Garden Bench

I had some weathered oak branches that I bought from a tree surgeon that had already been cut into random lengths. Eventually I thought I might be able to work them into a design for a bench. After a trying out a lot of different ideas this is the result. The slats for the seat and back are sawn oak from a tree blown down in 1987. Fixings are stainless steel and brass, the struts underneath are made from work hardened copper from an industrial electrical installation.

Oak and Chestnut Bench by

Oak and Chestnut Bench

This bench was made for a BBC 2 gardening programme which was filmed in Corris, near Machynlleth. The frame is made out of oak fence posts, the back and seat is from a wind blown chestnut tree.

This bench was made along the same lines as the one above and also had a table to go with it. The frame of this bench is made from reclaimed oak joists, the seat, back and table top are chestnut.
